Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Sal's Fig produces a large crop of medium to small black to dark purple figs with dark strawberry pulp and a white to amber flesh with a good rich sweet flavor. It has excellent hardiness and is a good choice for the East coast. Fairly late ripening in cooler climates. This is a found fig that originated from the Dipaolo family in Long Island, New York and is very similar to Hardy Chicago. Fig trees do best where they get at least 8 hours of direct sun per day. Once well established they are fairly drought tolerant but extended dry periods can cause leaf and fruit drop as well as early dormancy. A deep organic mulch will help to alleviate extremes in moisture levels, reduce nematode issues, as well as to reduce competition from weeds.
