Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Jurupa produces large crops of large to very large rounded to pear shaped green figs with amber to pink flesh sometimes streaked with strawberry red. The figs are sweet with an excellent flavor and have a small to open eye sealed with honeydew. Certainly a good choice for California and the drier portions of the South. Jurupa is a result of Dr. Ira Condit's breeding efforts at UC Davis, Riverside and was selected by Julius Enderud. Fig trees do best where they get at least 8 hours of direct sun per day. Once well established they are fairly drought tolerant but extended dry periods can cause leaf and fruit drop as well as early dormancy. A deep organic mulch will help to alleviate extremes in moisture levels, reduce nematode issues, as well as to reduce competition from weeds.
