Nursery contributed plant descriptions

SFA: "The cloud forest sugar maple, Acer saccharum ssp. skutchii, occurs as five disjunct populations, with four in Mexico and one in Guatemala. First described in Guatemala in 1936, this species is the southernmost sugar maple, a rare relic from the Miocene era, probably separated from those in North America in the Pleistocene. he tree is similar in many respects to Acer saccharum , sugar maple, and Acer saccharum var. floridanum (syn. A. arbatum), the Florida maple, but features larger leaves, and perhaps the biggest samaras found in Aceraceae." 50' or more, very drought and heat tolerant, with marsecent foliage.
Looking for a heat tolerant Sugar Maple for your southern garden, look no further. The Cloud Forest Sugar Maple is the southern most subspecies of the Sugar Maples and like it's northern cousins the fall color is excellent even in the South where it produces yellow, orange, and red tones. This is a moderate growing deciduous tree and is tolerant of acid or alkaline soils. Acer skutchii sports the largest samaras (the winged fruit) of any of the Maples adding to its interest. Unusually tolerant of Alkaline soils. We have to say thank you to Dr. Creech and the good people at Stephen F. Austin University for sharing this species with us!
