Nursery contributed plant descriptions

The Brooklyn Dark fig was found growing in a yard in Brooklyn, New York and was selected for its cold hardiness as well as for the large crop of medium-sized purple figs with an amber to red flesh and excellent flavor. Reportedly bears two crops per season. Brooklyn Dark was apparently found and introduced by Trees of Joy out of Bethlehem, PA. Fig trees do best where they get at least 8 hours of direct sun per day. Once well established they are fairly drought tolerant but extended dry periods can cause leaf and fruit drop as well as early dormancy. A deep organic mulch will help to alleviate extremes in moisture levels, reduce nematode issues, as well as to reduce competition from weeds.
