    Sedum mexicanum Lemon Coral™ is an evergreen groundcover cactus / succulent with chartreuse and gold foliage. In spring yellow flowers emerge. Attracts bees making it an excellent addition to pollinator gardens. Grows well with sun - mostly sun and occasional - low water. Drought tolerant once established. Adapts to various soil conditions. Does well in average, gritty and well-drained soil. A good option if you're seeking something heat tolerant.

    Often also called Sedum reflexum 'Lemon Coral' but 'Lemon Ball' is a true Mexican species of Sedum. Lemon Ball is much more heat tolerant than other Sedum varieties, which are already known as heat loving plants. When left alone this variety will form a dense mat of golden foliage, which pairs very well with dark or blue colored plants such as Blue Fescue, Plum Pudding Coral Bells, or Purple Sandcherry. Lemon Ball really shows its true value in formally pruned gardens, where it can be pruned back in late winter to an inch or two high. New stems will grow back so thick and fast that they seem to explode out from the center and form a nearly perfect sphere.

    Shipping Sedums
    Sedum plants ship throughout the entire year. Because they tend to have many but smaller roots as opposed to one central root system like trees or shrubs have, Sedums are usually shipped rolled up in paper with the root matt in the middle. When you receive your plant, just place it in its new location with the roots down and the foliage up. Throw about an inch of loose compost or coarse sand over the plant and water - the coarse sand or compost will wash down to cover the roots and leave most of the foliage above ground. Water every few days for two weeks and your plant will be fully established. Much easier than digging a hole for a woody plant!

    Propagating Lemon Ball Sedum and Other Stonecrops
    Stems root easily - in the fall clip off a five inch long section of stem and bury the end in loose soil leaving the growing tip facing straight up. Water right away and the plant should be rooted by spring! You can also root cuttings easily during the active growing season under mist, or divide clumps in mid spring.

    Sometimes labeled as Sedum ruprestre or reflexum, which are in most situations quite hardy, this bright lemon yellow selection looks similar to S. ruprestre 'Angelina, but it is a brighter color, a bit taller, and not anywhere near as hardy. It does grow quickly to form a nice mounding mat 6-8" tall and as wide as you let it, and we find it a colorful accent for containers.
