Bolt upright stems cloaked in royal burgundy leaves are 2-3' tall and topped August > October with bright, scarlet red flowers! Ready for a hummingbird convention? This perennial needs constantly moist soil and is quite happy in a bog or even submerged just below the surface of a pond. It's a clumper and only about 15-18" wide. Often referred to as 'short lived', we've had ours for 10+ years and dividing it once in awhile seems to give it a new life…it's easy enough! Full sun for strong stems (no staking!).
Zn 6. Brilliant red flowers. Tall dark red foliage
It might be impossible to find another summer perennial with such electric, scarlet-red flowers on 3-4 ft spikes. And excellent red-bronze foliage in late spring, too. Wowser! Wet to moist soil. Minimum temperature: -40°F
The rich burgundy foliage of this hybrid native perennial make it a standout even when it's not in flower! In summer the dark rosette of foliage is topped by glowing scarlet spikes of flaring tubular blooms. Grow this moisture loving plant in a bog garden or in average to wet garden soils. Attracts Hummingbirds. Does best with a consistently moist to wet soil. The true origin of this plant seems to have been confused as it is often listed as a cultivar of the native Cardinal Flower, Lobelia cardinalis and as a hybrid.
If you have the spot for this plant then there is no reason to not to grow this unless you simply don't do red because this is a smoldering fountain of saturated pigmentation celebrating the red spectrum. Red foliage and bright red flowers on 3'-4' stems in late summer. Moist and rich.
Shocking red flowers in profusion adorn this red-bronze foliaged Lobelia. Blooms all summer; a hummingbird's delight. To 3-5 ft tall spreading slowly to form a clump up to 2 ft wide. Likes to be kept reasonably damp but in well-drained soil. Full sun for best color. A die-back perennial, returning in the spring. Frost hardy to -10F, USDA zone 6.
Not your common upright Lobelia, this one has HUGE 2” brizilliant scarlet flowers & lush, satiny chocolate brown foliage! Multi-stemmed from the base, the sturdy vertical stalks reach 3’ tall & bloom mid-Summer till Fall. An absolute stunner of a shade plant & here in our mild climate, gets better every year! Composty soil. Terrific in a container & awesome cut flowers.
