'Petite Negra' is a super dwarf fig tree that happily produces in small containers. The leaves have a unique growth habit. The fruit appears early, it is dark purple, and is medium in size. This is the perfect fig to grow outdoors in warmer zones or to use as a winter houseplant and summer outdoor patio plant in colder zones. Let's grow figs right across Canada!
'Petite Negra' is an amazing fruiting fig that produces medium sized plump black juicy figs at a young age. This impressive fig is perfect for the indoor or patio gardener since it starts fruiting when plants are less than 12" tall. 'Petite Negra' is an ornamental beauty as well since the mitten-shaped green leaves make a lovely backdrop for the ripening deep purple fruit. Grow in full sun on a windowsill or outside in warm temperatures. If growing conditions are kept warm, it will hold its foliage year-round. Under cool temperatures, the plant will drop its leaves and go dormant until temperatures warm up.
The fruit of Petite Negri, which translates to the little black fig, is anything but little as it produces large to medium sized black to dark purple fruit with amber flesh and strawberry to purple pulp with excellent flavor. The Petite side is that this is a dwarf tree that is a good choice for containers and it is known to produce fruit even at a very young age. The eye is small to closed so this should minimize spoiling of the fruit. Small productive and hardy. Petite Negri is also known by the names Petit Negri and Petite Negra. Fig trees do best where they get at least 8 hours of direct sun per day. Once well established they are fairly drought tolerant but extended dry periods can cause leaf and fruit drop as well as early dormancy. A deep organic mulch will help to alleviate extremes in moisture levels, reduce nematode issues, as well as to reduce competition from weeds.
