Passiflora edulis 'Possum Purple' is a broadleaf evergreen or semi-evergreen perennial vine with green foliage. In summer purple flowers emerge followed by purple fruit. Attracts bees and butterflies making it an excellent addition to pollinator gardens. Grows well with sun - mostly shade and regular - occasional water. Prefers to be dry in winter. Does well in acidic, rich and well-drained soil.

Passion Fruit is a twining, climbing vine native to the subtropical regions of South America and the fruit is a staple in these regions for juices, jams, wines, and eating fresh out of hand. In addition to incredible fruit, the flowers on this plant are out of this world. Large blossoms have frilly edges and a can be quite large, sometimes up to 4 inches across and incredibly fragrant. ‘Purple Possum’ is a self-fertile variety of passion vine, producing with only a single plant. Plants are evergreen in warm climates but can die back to the roots in cooler climates during the winter. Vines will regrow from the energy stored in the roots in late spring, quickly reclaiming their former glory. Be cautious not to fertilize this vine too heavily or it will grow a lot of vegetative growth but will be hesitant to bloom. They thrive on neglect! Cold hardy to USDA zone 9a and above, or 20 degrees Fahrenheit.
Possum purple passionfruit is considered an AAAA+ fresh eating variety and known as a super fast grower. Cold hardy subtropical and easily withstands frosts and the occasional freeze. Grows 30 feet in a season. Medium to full sun.
This amazing passion flower not only produces delicious, sweet purple fruit, it also has attractive frilly-edged flowers that passifloras are known for. It is self-pollinating with fruit appearing effortlessly and will fruit in a 10" pot. 'Purple Possum' is a strong vigorous grower, especially during the summer months, and needs support such as a trellis or stake. With a little encouragement, it makes a fine hanging basket. Periodically just wrap the wandering vines around the basket and in no time fruit will be dangling from the dark green leaves. Give full sun for best performance.
This species is one of the tastiest and is commonly grown in the tropics. 'Possum Purple' is a self-fertile selection with exceptional flavour and mind-blowing flowers. Grow in full sun. Plants may be hardy in coastal BC in protected microclimates where the stem is planted/buried 6 inches deeper than the soil surface of the pot. Will fruit in containers that can be protected in winter in a sun room or as a houseplant
This a very easy and strong-growing, perennial vine with beautiful glossy leaves, exotic white and purple flowers, which are followed by large purple, rounded fruit, about the size of tangerines, with a nice flavor.
