Nursery contributed plant descriptions

General Pershing boasts big beautiful double red blossoms in large bouquets at the ends of weeping stems. One petal of each flower is often streaked with a bright contrasting white. This beautiful double red oleander is considered fairly cold hardy and while the stems of ours froze to ground level during the winters of 2009-10 and 2010-11, it did return from the roots. Many others have mentioned that General Pershing is probably best left to large containers in areas north of zone 9,10, and 11 where it can grow to become a fairly large evergreen shrub or small weeping tree standard. Oleanders are extremely durable and reliable evergreen shrubs for mild winter climates and are especially well adapted to the mild coastal regions of the US. Salt tolerant, drought resistant, deer resistant, and adaptable to a variety of soil types although they do appreciate good drainage and seem to prefer a mineral soil over humus based soils.
