Cistus ladanifer ssp. sulcatus is a broadleaf evergreen shrub with green foliage. In spring and summer burgundy and white flowers emerge. Attracts bees and butterflies making it an excellent addition to pollinator gardens. Grows well with sun and occasional - low water. Drought tolerant once established. Prefers to be dry in summer. Adapts to various soil conditions. Does well in acidic, alkaline, average, clay, gritty, lean, rocky and well-drained soil. A good option if you're seeking something heat tolerant, seaside / salt tolerant, verticillium wilt resistant and wind tolerant.

Evergreen shrub, to 4-5', with dark foliage deeply infused with labdanum, the wonderfully aromatic oil that either feels silky smooth to the touch or like a sticky fly paper depending on the light and temperature. To us, it's real beauty lies in the spring clusters of flowers, white with burgundy blotches -- most attractive -- and ruffled, appearing almost as a semi-double rose. Summer drought tolerant in full sun with mineral soil, so little to no summer water once established. Frost hardy to 15 °F, mid USDA zone 8.
