Maianthemum dilatatum is a beautiful and choice BC native ground cover for shade. It grows as a rhizomatous perennial that forms a lush colony of shiny heart-shaped leaves topped with short spikes of starry white flowers in spring. The resultant berries are at first greenish or greenish yellow and slowly become increasingly speckled with red through the summer turning completely red by fall. Known as false or two-leaved Solomon's seal or false lily of the valley or deer heart. Formerly known scientifically as Smilacina dilatata. Tolerant of deep shade, dry shade, and moist sites. Can spread vigorously in rich soils. Attracts bees and sometimes butterflies. Mostly deer resistant.
