Zn 4. A mix if brightly colored flowers. Evergreen
Southwestern Oregon Lewisia bloom spring to fall in an array of all the colors of the sunset, a perfect reflection of the one I once saw standing on top a rocky outcrop in the Siskiyous. 1" flowers with white striations in each waxy-looking petal, cluster above succulent, dark evergreen, ground-hugging rosettes: 6" tall flower stalks, and one foot wide mound. Tap-rooted to find its way between rock crevices, it will thrive amongst rocks or gravel, doing well also in a sharply draining pot. Make a mounded gravelly bed of summer-long color, or plant in a wall crevice, atop a dry-stacked stone wall, or make a long-lasting, easy care gift in a pot. Winner of a Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit. (Cliff Maids - should be a name for a women's rock-climbing club.) Minimum temperature: -40 °F
Evergreen, drought-tolerant plant with lance-shaped foliage and an intense display of pink, salmon, orange, and violet flowers. Blooms appear late spring to early summer. Great for dry areas as an accent plant or for a rock garden. Growth Rate medium
Lewisia was first discovered by Lewis and Clark and the genus' beauty has delighted for more than 200 years since. The lovely little evergreen succulent rosettes are adorned in late spring with clusters of brilliantly coloured flowers which, in the Sunset Group, consists of oranges, salmons and pinks. Plants may rebloom later in the season. A native of alpine regions, Lewisia require good drainage and enjoy full to part sun. Plant them in containers, rock gardens and in the crevices of retaining walls.
Bright colors
Leaves exhibit a wavy, indented margin, and flowers in a range of orange hues bloom year round in coastal climates.
In shades of a sunset (apricot, tangerine, yellow, cream, deep pink), this "perennial jewel of the Pacific NW" requires only good drainage (rock garden/pot) to produce its 1" flowers on 6" stems in late spring. S/MDGDr
Eye-catching waxy flowers in shades of white, deep pink, yellow or apricot on 6" stems above fleshy leaved rosettes. Needs a sharply drained soil, that is still rich. Nestle into crevices in the rock garden of use in troughs.
Gorgeous in flower, this perennial jewel of the Pacific Northwest is also extremely hardy, long blooming and low maintenance if you provide it with a happy home. From a burst of bloom in May, it continues to deliver a succession of flower clusters to September in a radiant range of sunset colors (apricot pink, soft tangerine and soft yellow) - all lovely. Held atop sturdy 6” stems, the 1” flowers are held in radiating clusters above an attractive succulent 5" green rosette that develops into a considerable mound with time. Deeply tap-rooted, Lewisia benefits from some dryness, so all you have to do is plant them in a clay pot with some gravel added or stick them in the cracks of a rock wall (they love that) or enjoy them in a well-drained rock garden. That's not asking much, eh? Though they say not to, I give them a little bit of compost every year (I can't resist!) and they bloom even more - hee-hee!
