Evergreen clumps of dark green foliage generously spotted with dots and dashes of cream shine in light to deep shade, 14-24” tall and wide. Drought tolerant once established, looks best protected from the worst winter winds, Decent soil, regular water to establish. Also, one of the few houseplants I haven’t killed indoors!
Often sold in the United States as 'Milky way", this one in no way resembles that one. The Japanese name 'Ginga' means "spotted and streaked" and this plant is that. Stunning purple flowers, often called "spider eggs", appear in early spring but can only be appreciated by lying belly down in an accommodating gardener's garden. Worth the trouble. Part shade to deep shade with little or no summer water necessary. Frost hardy in USDA zone 7.
Aspidistra lurida ginga is one of the commonly called cast iron plant. A tough and showy plant with long strap like leaves held upright usually 1 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 4 inches wide. Each leaf is covered in small specks of white dots. It is a tough plant and I recently seen some very impressive mature clumps 3 tall that were unlike any I had seen before. It is a much more showy plant than I had thought. Flowers are held at the base and rarely noticed. However they are very hardy handling regular cold spells and surviving zone 7 and even colder if in a protected area.
