Nursery contributed plant descriptions

This large and highly ornamental species exhibits a strong vertical form to 5' tall and bears showy springtime flowers making it an excellent choice for larger containers. Thread-like branches cluster at the nodes along the vertical, whip-like stems and large, feathery inflorescences appear at the gently arching tips. Particularly handsome when backlit by morning or afternoon light.
Texture plus PLUS! Not a fern, but rather ferny & not a reed, but rather reedy, this handsome restio makes a stately accent in the border with its silvery sheened leaves-that-aren't-leaves & golden-brown feathery blooms. Growing to 3' high with an equal spread (though narrow at the base) this species is found in a wide range of soils & situations in its native South Africa, though it will thrive best in soil that is well draining. Restios don't cherish being crowded, so mind your spacing. This one can take a bit of shade. "Silver Reed" is evergreen, but not terribly hardy, so protect this special plant from serious frosts! To maintain, simply remove the faded stems as necessary. These make very fine impromptu garden brooms!
