The Morton Miyabe Maple, selected from the collections of The Morton Arboretum, Lisle, Illinois, is an outstanding maple known for its durability, adaptability, and multiple seasons of interest. The original tree was accessioned and planted in 1929, and can still be seen today at The Morton Arboretum. It is a uniform growing tree more densely branched than most maples, making it an excellent shade tree. The satin-surfaced, medium to dark green leaves are attractive all season, in fall changing to a pale golden hue. The Morton Miyabe Maple has exceptional tolerance to urban pollution, heat, cold, acidic or alkaline soil, and is fairly drought tolerant for a maple once established. Use it as a medium to large street tree, and in parks and residential yards as a shade tree. It is a more cold hardy alternative to hedge maple (A. campestre) in northern growing conditions, and is a more elegant appearing, non-weedy and more heat/drought resistant alternative to Norway maple (A. platanoides). Consider it as a replacement tree for native ash trees (Fraxinus sp.) in areas infested with Emerald Ash Borer. It can also be used as a stronger-wooded substitute for silver maple (Acer saccharinum), and as a red maple (A. rubrum) substitute in areas where alkaline soils can induce problems with chlorosis.
