    Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Low growing -- to 3-4 ft -- deep green leaved form of this oh-so-useful genus. With 2 ft wide, 6-8" long leaves and bright red berries, sometimes produced with no "men" nearby. Although drought tolerant, best with even summer moisture and able to grow in the darkest spots. We have them growing among the golden culms of a timber bamboo, providing a great contrast. Frost hardy in USDA zone 7; zone 6 out of wind. Garryaceae
