Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Seed from our good friend Ginny Hunt and her fabulous garden in Watsonville, this is most UNsalvia like. Shrubby foliage with a very pleasant fragrance and fabulous flowers: brown fading to golden fading to mauve. Floral arranger's delight. Full sun with little water in the garden. Take an insurance cutting to over winter in the windowsill. Frost hardy in USDA zone 9.
Known as Salvia aurea until the 1990's, this evergreen shrub grows to 3' tall with a similar spread, and bears bright yellow flowers surrounded by a tan, papery calyx in spring and summer. The flowers turn a rusty orange as the season progresses, creating a handsome display against the gray-green foliage. Plant in full sun and provide moderate water. A light shearing after flowering helps maintain a tidy shape. Hardy to 20F. South Africa.
