Reddish-brown bark and shoots give this Northeastern U.S. 60-75' tree its common name of Red Spruce, a long lived and large (to 150' in its native climates) specimen that is a beautiful and extremely useful conifer; it is an excellent tonewood much used for high end musical instruments with pretty light colored wood, it is also the source of spruce gum and the twigs can be boiled for as part of spruce beer; densely set needles are a fine yellow-green.
