Its large glossy leaves and growth habit (20-25') give this tree holly a resemblance to Magnolia grandiflora until the bright-red berries arrive to decorate its winter branches; leaves have been used to make a fragrant tea. S-PSh/M
Not your ordinary holly, this Chinese native has been in North America for more than 100 years. A small, pyramidal tree, to 25-30 ft tall with long leaves, to nearly 10", that emerge deep mahogany maturing to glossy dark green. This selection from the Kunming Botanic Garden, a male clone, has particularly large leaves and handsome white flowers. Can be used as an evergreen, street tree or in courtyards where a large texture is needed. Best with sun and regular summer water. Cold hardy in USDA zone 8 and upper zone 7.
The large, up to 8" long, glossy, deep green, finely-serrate foliage adorns a fast growing dense pyramidal evergreen tree. Tiny green and white, nicely fragrant spring flowers are followed by large, long-lasting green berries that ripen to a dull to brick red by late winter. Use as a specimen plant, or as a screen in any sunny well-drained location. Item# 9448. Good drought tolerance once well established.
