Rosa nutkana, known as the Nootka, bristly, or wild rose, is native to western North America including BC. It typically grows as a thicket of multiple canes 4-6 feet high, sometimes taller, topped with lovely, fragrant, single flowers in shades of mid pink set off by the light yellow stamens in early summer. The attractive orange-red hips are edible but can be bitter. Popular with native bees and butterflies. It is a larval host for various butterfly and moth species including the mourning cloak and grey hairstreak butterflies. Provides habitat for nesting birds. Tolerant of sun to shade. The strikingly handsome flowers of this variable 3-6' thicket forming shrub may be as much as 3 1/2" across and range from pale-pink to deep-rose.
