The strikingly handsome flowers of this variable 3-6' thicket forming shrub may be as much as 3 1/2" across and range from pale-pink to deep-rose. The pretty single roses are followed by are followed by bright-red hips, the hips are edible and said to be tastier when bletted. This rose is native to the pastures, woodlands, prairies and meadows of much of the American west, from Alaska to the Rockies. This species was used by several Native American tribes for food, art and medicine. It is the larval host of the mourning cloak and grey hairstreak butterflies.
