Nursery contributed plant descriptions

This uncommon species has extraordinarily thick, pointed needles and large, rounded resinous orange-brown buds. It is unlike any other spruce and truly unique!
The Tigertail is a spiny beast indeed, with thick spine tipped needles arranged radically around the shoots making them a pain to graft, it has a reputation for being a bit tender but has never suffered any damage here without protection in an exposed spot by the parking lot. In its native haunts on the slopes of volcanoes in Japan, old plants display pendulous tiger-tailed branchlets, a character not seen in young cultivated material.
Stout, sickle-shaped, spine-pointed 1"needles sprout all around the branchlets of this uncommon conifer like "tiger tails"; broadly conical habit with horizontal branching ; shiny yel-brwn-to-whitish branches. S-P/M
