Laburnum anagyroides

In late spring 4-8" pendulous, wisteria-like clusters of golden-yellow pea flowers hang like golden chains from all along the branches of this superb 15-20' tree. Its beautifully soft leaves are almost clover-like, grey-green above and lightly fuzzy on their undersides. This tree makes a fantastic specimen and it is also quite lovely planted as a screen. Native to the mountains of southern Europe anagyroides has yellow pea-flowers in pendulous racemes 10-30 cm (4-12 in) long in spring, which makes them very popular garden trees. In L. anagyroides the racemes are 10-20 cm (4-8 in) long, with densely packed flowers.

Laburnum Anagyroides, also known as the golden chain tree, is a hardy tree that looks very tropical with small green leaves and brown- green trunk. As this tree matures it displays large chains of yellow orchid like flowers that hang down off the brackets. This is a great tree for any hardy tropical garden, growing 15 to 20 feet tall and 10 to 12 feet wide. It grows in full sun to part shade and is hardy to zones 5 and up.
