Nursery contributed plant descriptions

An interesting and pretty relative of the avocado! Red Bay is a handsome 20-40' tree native to the swamps of the southeast United States. Featuring large, glossy evergreen leaves. The foliage emits a nice spicy scent when crushed and the dried leaves are sometimes used a culinary herb for soups. It was also used medicinally by the Seminole Indians. Its hard wood is suitable for cabinet making. This is a fine specimen for wet areas and rain gardens. Very tolerant of salt, making it a good choice for coastal conditions. S-PSh/M-W
