Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Asclepias incarnata 'Ice Ballet', like the other milkweeds, is a species that arose as a result of an evolutionary arms race with different butterfly species who drove the milkweeds to develop increasingly toxic poisons in their milky sap to fend off the butterflies' ravenous caterpillars. So leave the chewing to the monarchs! This species has upright branching stems with oblong leaves topped with dense clusters of tiny, pure white, vanilla-scented flowers which attract butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. Tolerant of moist, wet or average garden soils. Deer resistant.

This bright-white selection is as pretty as its name suggests and is always appreciated in the border or vase for its long-stemmed, 3-4' flowers. This choice cultivar is easy-going in nature and perfect for perennial, cutting, pollinator, rain, or native gardens. Asclepias are the only larval food for the glorious Monarch butterfly, planting Milkweed ensures a food source for these important pollinators. S/M-W

A lovely selection of Butterfly Weed with icy white flower clusters on 40" stems in July-Aug. Great for naturalizing. 'Ice Ballet' is at its best in sun and tolerates moist or average soil. a magnet for butterflies.

Fascinatingly different new German strain with waxy white umbels, splendid cut; at one time Herb Wagner found a white form of Asclepias tuberosa which would have been interesting in a cross with this, sadly he died before showing me the location. ZONE 4
