The huge rounded leaves of this incredible perennial can be 2-3' across! These 4-6' clumps of 'dinosaur food' plants are perfect for dramatic plantings, but not for the small or dry garden. Baseball-size flower buds erupt in late winter to reveal fragrant white flower clusters on tall stalks. This is cultivated in Japan as a choice edible; the stalks are cooked in soups or preserved in miso. Easily grown in moist to wet soils; this can spread very aggressively, so take care to plant it in containers or use barriers. PSh-Sh/M-W
This imposing spreading perennial has leaves growing up to 5 feet tall and 4 feet wide and will form large colonies in time. The flowers emerge in early spring before the foliage as creamy white rounded clusters at the ground that later elongate. Protect emerging foliage from slugs. This plant is a spreader though I find it easy to control in my garden since the rhizomes are just below the soil surface and easy to pull out where I don't want it.
Some of the largest leaves from a winter hardy perennial here, looks crazy and out of place in Michigan, which I love. When happy it will run AGGRESSIVELY, and it is often happy, so let it loose in a big bog where it can spread out and be amazing without bothering anyone. Zone 5
Blooms: spring, white flowers that when emerging look like an ornamental cabbage/ Huge foliage to three feet across. Give lots of room for best foliage effect. Zone 4-9. 6', Japan, part shade-shade, moist, well drained.
This is the big guy. Leaves can reach 2 feet across. Likes a damp spot but will grow in average garden spots also. Leaves are slightly fuzzy when young. Flowers open before leaves appear, often in February here.
