Nursery contributed plant descriptions

This uncommon species from Northern China and Korea tends to become somewhat spreading and flat-headed with age (tabuliformis meaning table-shaped). Typically reaching 30-50' in cultivation and 70' in its native habitat. Long (6") needles in bundles of two are deep-green; the bark becomes fissured with age, grey tinged with pink or orange. S/M
Also known as the Chinese Red Pine, Pinus tabuliformis gets its common name of 'Tabletop Pine' from the naturally occuring flat top that develops on mature trees. Trees grow easily in well drained soils and produce dense foliage on wide spreading branches. As they grow older Tabletop Pines develop a red hue on their bark, but the bark is typically light gray on young trees.
Tabletop Pines make excellent bonsai specimens because they produce more horizontal spreading branches than many other species of Pine. This feature also lends their use to forming evergreen hedges and screens.
