This is a beautiful 30-50' tree (up to 150' in the wild!) featuring long, blue-green, gracefully-drooping needles appearing in bundles of five. Very ornamental pendulous cones hang on this lovely specimen found from the Himalayas to Burma. With adequate sun, this treasure will retain its bottom branches giving it a graceful sweeping appearance. Older specimens will have most attractive fissured gray bark. S/M-D

The Himalayan Blue Pine (also known as the Chinese White Pine or Himalayan White Pine) is similar in appearance to the American White Pine Pinus strobus but with a light blue needle color and tuftier branches. The needles are long and dense on young plants and trees develop a thick trunk quickly. As the trees age the branches become spaced farther apart and the tree gets a more open habit overall with a bluer color than younger trees. The long needles are droopy which gives the tree an overall flowy appearance.

This species is slower growing than many other pines and is a better choice compared to other pine species in smaller landscapes. Typically plants grow around a foot per year and prefer well drained soil with some summer irrigation. The needles can get slightly burnt from extended periods of high winds so plant this tree where it gets a little bit of shelter. Like many other pine species, Himalayan White Pine trees do not grow well in heavy clay soils.

Pinus wallichiana is naturally highly resistant to both Pine Shoot Moths and the White Pine Blister Rust.
