Nursery contributed plant descriptions

This somewhat lower-growing but pretty-as-they-all-are Hibiscus has attractive leaves margined in creamy-yellow to offer to the summer border as well as some small double lilac-red flowers that never open fully. S/M
We saw a small plant in Hammer's garden and have since been begging every shoot he can spare for cuttings, on the premise that we are helping prevent it's touching nearby plants; Jim has a thing about that. A traffic stopper, the bold variegation is perhaps the best of any shrub I know, flowers are strange double purplish things that never fully open, giving a sort of carnation bud effect.
A native of India and China, this gorgeous shrub has been neglected in the trade although it's been around for years. Blooming from May until fall in the hottest, driest weather, it doesn't require watering and needs little attention. In 1778 Abercrombie called the plant "the greatest ornament of the autumn season, of almost any of the shrubby tribe..."
