This large evergreen shrub/tree is hardy to about 18°F and is well suited for Mediterranean climates. The pinnate leaves are very glossy and ornamental with a bronzy tint on new growth, tiny red flowers borne in catkin like racemes produces long pods which are dried and ground to provide Carob, most recognized as a chocolate substitute, the fruit is also used as a thickening agent, coffee substitute and medicine. Fruiting requires a male and female tree, ours are unsexed seedlings. This wonderfully unique tree also fixes its own nitrogen. S/M-D
