Nursery contributed plant descriptions

This interesting maple from the forests of western Asia to southeastern Europe forms a large shrub/small tree to 15-20'. Featuring very distinct foliage on older specimens, the shape of the leaves suggests Holodiscus not maple. A beautiful sight in autumn when the foliage turns incredible shades of chartreuse to yellow to red along with the showy abundant red samaras which are up to one inch long! S/M
Although extremely cold hardy, the Tatarian Maple is also heat and drought tolerant once established and grows in a wide range of climates and conditions including poor soils. It is popular for bonsai because of its small leaves and dense branching habit which allows the trees to be shaped easily. Tatarian Maple grows shorter than most other maple species and typically develops multiple trunks that reach 15 to 20 feet tall and 10 feet wide. The seeds are colorful in late summer and fall with their red wings and are especially attractive up close.
