Crape Myrtles are a popular tree because they grow very quickly and flower starting in their first year. They are one of the only trees that produces flowers in August and so are very useful for creating gardens with year-round flowers. As the trees age the bark becomes more and more attractive as the outer layer becomes porcelain-smooth. Trees will thrive in high heat climates such as the southwestern states but also handle cold winters. Flowers are produced on new growth so winter damage from extreme cold and storms will not prevent the tree from flowering heavily that same season.
Trees grow best in well drained soil in full sun but will tolerate light shade. Although trees will grow in deeper shade they will flower less aggressively.
This is another small growing variety with conspicuous fuschia-red flowers and bright maroon leaf colors in the fall. 6-8' in ten years.
