Nursery contributed plant descriptions

?Popular in Victorian and Edwardian gardens? (Hillier) and popular still for profuse double, bright-pink flowers appearing before the leaves on the upright branches of this 6' shrub... ?wands of blossom? (Sunset); for forcing or hedging. S/M-D
Double Pink Flowering Almond has fantastic deep pink flower color in mid to early April just as the leaves are starting to push out. Of all the flowering almond varieties, 'Rosea Plena' definitely is in the running for the best especially because of its pincushion shaped flowers. These usually are best appreciated in a row forming a loose hedge, or as a specimen plant with bright spring foliage like Goldmound Spirea to contrast with the deep pink flowers.
Plants do best with well drained soil and water about once per week. We have been impressed with its ability to recover after damage or drought and especially with the fact that it seems to bloom heavily every year even after mishap. For instance, one of our larger plants was crushed by a large falling branch and broken to the ground mid summer, but the tree grew back to its original height by fall and still bloomed in the spring.
In early spring, masses of 1/2-3/4" soft pink, double blossoms are borne before the foliage emerges. This is a durable and adaptable small shrub that does best in a well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade.
A small woody shrub/tree whose chief value is it's pink flowers. Best used in a mixed border of shrubs. Like forsythia's and some other shrubs, it's absolutely stunning in bloom. Nothing to write home about the rest of the year -- just nice -- BUT during the one season it shines, it really, really shines!
