Nursery contributed plant descriptions

This lovely willow is quite spectacular in spring when its dark-pink flower buds burst into large dusty-pink catkins; the pretty catkins fade to silver and are much loved by florists at all stages. This elegantly handsome 6' shrub features soft blue-green foliage. This cultivar was selected by Dr. Tsuneshige Rokujo and named for the largest active volcano in Japan. At is best when coppiced yearly, otherwise it can become rather leggy. S/M-W
Salix chaenomeloides is the Latin name for giant pussy willow. It is native to Japan but adapts well to a wide range of garden situations including sandy, average and even quite moist soil. Plants can get quite large, 15' or more. In order to have a steady supply of branches bearing rosy red catkins (which are male flowers by the way, are you surprised?) you should coppice (cut back to 2' above ground) every 2 or 3 years. This will keep plants at a more reasonable height and provide you with an ample supply of cut branches for winter arrangements. Limited Supply.
