Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Echinops sphaerocephalus 'Arctic Glow' is a globe thistle that has spiny grey-green leaves and intriguing, spherical, silver-grey flower heads that open into spheres of tiny white florets on branched grey to reddish stems in mid to late summer. The flowers begin to open at the top of the sphere gradually opening until the entire inflorescence is in bloom. Provide consistent moisture but plants are also tolerant of dry conditions. Can re-seed lightly in the garden. Use in the mid to back of the border and in dried flower arrangements. Incredibly popular with bees. Deer and rabbit resistant.

Large white globular flowers on 24-30" stems. The lower part of the foliage starts getting a little ratty in mid Summer as the plant comes into flower. I recommend planting it in mid border so that something a little shorter can skirt the lower part of the plant.

Topping erect mahogany-hued stems, snowy spheres provide a statuesque element heightened by prickly, silver-washed greenery. Planted with stately companions like Aconitum, Digitalis 'Gigantea Gelber Herold' and Veronicastrum, its noble orbs appear to glow.
