Nursery contributed plant descriptions

A truly handsome birch species (40-70') native to the eastern United States. Sometimes mistaken for a cherry tree due to its beautifully smooth, mahogany-colored, cherry-like bark, the lovely emerald-green leaves have fine yellow fall color; a strong evergreen aroma pervades the leaves and twigs and this species was used to make oil of wintergreen before modern synthesis; the sap can be used in Birch beer or boiled into a syrup; a fine and useful tree. S /M
Nice, pyramidal shape - becoming more rounded as it ages. Dark green leaves provide nice yellow color in fall. Said to have been a source of Wintergreen oil back in the day. Also known as Black Birch or Cherry Birch. Growth Rate fast
