This is one of my top choices for beautiful foliage in dry shade! The elongated heart shaped leaves on 15” stems are marbled in rich burgundy in spring, slowly turning to jade green by summer and are evergreen to about 5 degrees. This expanding perennial covers about a foot a year. Sulfur yellow flowers top the plants in April and May and put on quite a show! Tough and long lived in light shade & average garden soil…needs moderate moisture to become established.
Bright yellow lanterns dance on wiry stems above the dense foliage of this fine selection in spring, and then hand the show to the prickly-toothed leaves, which are strikingly marked with red in the fall. PSh/M
Brilliant golden yellow flowers on stems up to 12" tall. The evergreen foliage holds up well during most winters, but we take hedge shears to the plants in January-February. One of the most vigorous growers in the garden.
Zn 5. Yellow flowers. Bronze-tinted leaves.
E. perralchicum ~ Elongated heart shaped leaflets are mottled red in spring topped by large butter yellow flowers. Plant in partial sun to nearly full shade. Height: 10” to 15”. Zones 5-9. Evergreen.
This chance hybrid occurred in Wisley Garden where E. pinnatum ssp. colchicum (from Turkey) was growing alongside E. perralderianum (from Algeria). Their love child was the cross that lead to this cultivar with large (for a barrenwort), bright yellow flowers with short brown spurs. Epimediums are among the easiest perennials to grow. They thrive in medium to heavy shade, and when established, are highly drought tolerant. They are deer resistant and are seldom bothered by other critters.
With a dainty style that defies its stoic nature, 'Frohnleiten' can handle dry conditions and is quick to colonize. Buoyant, loosely formed clusters of pendulous, vibrant yellow winged flowers perch above the tailored leafy clump. bright green veins dramatically pattern maroon-infused spring foliage, while summer brings verdant greenery, and autumn a florid fanfare that sometimes persists into winter.
Perralderianum x pinnatum colchicum, 'Frohnleiten' is intermediate between the two but with more finely toothed foliage; It has lovely reddish markings in fall some of the literature reports it as a bit tender, I guess our plants never read the books. ZONE 4
A hybrid between E. perralderinaum and E. pinnatum ssp. colchicum, both very drought tolerant, which makes this selection from Germany also very drought tolerant. This particular variety has rose-red mottled - green veined foliage in spring, turning dark green in summer.
A good, robust plant up to 1' tall, with yellow flowers and evergreen leaves of three leaflets that emerge bronze in spring. The flowering stems are leafless and the spurs slightly curved up.

By: Greer Gardens Inc.

A choice and more vigorous selection of Barrenwort, with olive green foliage and stiff stems bearing myriads of spurred yellow flowers in May. 10-12" tall plants form thick clumps becoming 2' across with time. Epimediums are often considered the aristocrats of the garden but they are easy plants to grow...give them a reasonable soil with good drainage. They multiply slowly at first, but live forever.
