It is named for an early pilot from Lithuania, Stephen Darius. Flying with Stanley T. Girenas (who also has a clematis bearing his name), they attempted a nonstop flight from New York to Lithuania in 1933. Light purple flowers with a dark purple-red bar are the hallmark of this selection.
