Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Young red stems hold nodding periwinkle-blue flowers that have interior cream petals. Blooms June - September and climbs 15'x15'. Mulch in winter.
Blue Bird is very hardy and one of the earliest Clematis to bloom in northern gardens. The pendulous blue flowers are 2 to 2 1/2 inches across and repeat sometimes in summer after a full bloom in mid spring. Any pruning should be done after flowering since it sets buds in fall for the following spring. The texture of the foliage makes it an excellent backdrop for perennials all summer! Skinner, Canada, 1962.
We especially like this vigorous deciduous cultivar for its smoky silver seed heads. But nodding violet-blue flowers with inner petals of cream also combine with young red stems and coarsely toothed medium green leaves to make this species a colorful favorite.
