Nursery contributed plant descriptions

?By all odds our most outstanding native tree for home use, [this] dogwood is ornamental all year.? (B.Miles)...graceful in winter, spectacular white flowers in spring, dark-crimson fall color and fine red berries. S-PSh/M
Eastern Dogwood trees produce large numbers of bright white flowers in mid-spring which are followed by bright red fruit in late summer. Eastern Dogwoods establish quickly and develop a very attractive single trunk tree as opposed to the shrubby form of most other similar-flowering dogwood species. The fall leaf color is a very attractive pink-red, similar in appearance to the closely related Western Dogwood (Cornus nuttallii).

If you live in an area where dogwood anthracnose is a serious problem you can plant the Chinese Kousa Dogwood instead, Kousa Dogwoods produce similar flowers but are very resistant to anthracnose.
Our native dogwood has wide spread popularity, and rightly so. Excellent flowers, fruit, bark, and fall color: all wrapped in a single package. Among the most valuable of flowering trees. Grows 8-10? in ten years. Matures at around 25? tall. Awards: Award of Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society. Recommended by: the United States National Arboretum.
