A wide-spreading, open, irregularly branched, large 15-25' shrub whose stems are covered with a dense reddish-brown down much like the velvet on a stag's horns; large, compound pinnate leaves, are deep-green above and glaucous below and turn a glorious orange, yellow, red in autumn, showy green-yellow flowers become large rusty-red pyramidal seed clusters on female plants (ours are unsexed seedlings), this sensational eastern native can form dense thickets if allowed.
