Coralberry is excellent 2-5' shrub from the open woodlands and pastures of the eastern and central United States. It spreads by runners to form large thickets which make it a wonderful choice for erosion control. Pink-tinted, white blossoms hang like bells in summer becoming eye-catching coral-purple-red fruits which hang in clusters along the stems in fall and winter. The winter stems make a wonderful cut flower display! S-PSh/M
The summer foliage resembles that of Spirea with its small, deep green leaves growing densely throughout the shrub. Clumps of small white or pink flowers cover the plant in early summer. The real interest is in the winter, however, after the leaves drop. In the fall the leaves fall away to reveal masses of purple, blue, or red berries alone on the thin woody stems. The berries are a good winter food source for birds but they are not edible for humans.
The snow berry is very drought tolerant and survives throughout the summer at our nursery even without water, however its preferred climate is near streams and creeks. Deer will occasionally eat the fresh growth but prefer other plants and usually leave this species alone.
A gorgeous specimen that bursts forth with color each fall. It almost glows from the coral-colored berries covering the branches. The berries remain on the plant through winter. Enjoy them in your yard or pick them for indoor decorating. Birds love the berries. Coralberry is an important wildlife plant. Birds and small mammals use this plant for food, cover, and nesting.
