Nursery contributed plant descriptions

‘Susan' has luscious, knee-weakening red-purple buds and petals with pale purple interiors. It is one of a group of eight magnolias developed from crosses of Magnolia liliflora ‘Nigra’ × M. stellata ‘Rosea’ made in the 1950s. These eight plants, known affectionately as "The Girls", were selected and named by William F. Kosar and released in 1968. The others are 'Ann', 'Betty', 'Judy', 'Randy', 'Ricki', 'Susan', 'Jane' and 'Pinkie'.
The best of the Kosar-DeVos hybrids! We have grown this group since the early 70's. The rich purple flowers cover the plant for at least a month in April. This is a hardy plant that stays small (12'-14') and has pretty flowers. What more can a gardener ask for?
This Kosar/deVos hybrid of M. kobus var. stellata 'Rosea' x M. liliiflora 'Nigra' features erect, slender flower buds that bloom in April, revealing 4-6" flowers that display red-purple hues on both sides of the tepals. Leaves measure about 5" and are ovate. Deciduous and shrubby, it grows to 10-15' or more. Like 'Ricki', it is mildew resistant.
