Nursery contributed plant descriptions

One of the most beautiful pines, known as the lacebark pine due to the fact that the bark flakes away to reveal a very eye-catching patchwork of white, green, and purple, this requires some patience as it will be 10 years or so before the tree is mature enough to put on its show; dark-green needles 2-4inches long are in bundles of three on this easy going 30-50' tree. S/M
Lacebark Pine is probably one of the most interesting of all pines because of the strongly exfoliating bark on mature trees. The lacy bark doesn't tend to appear for 10-20 years but in the meantime forms a beautiful specimen with evenly spaced branches. Unlike most pines, Lacebark naturally produces multiple trunks and grows more like a hardwood such as an Oak or Pacific Madrone. The naturally dense branching habit makes Lacebark Pine one of the best choices for growing bonsai specimens.

Evergreen conifer with interesting exfoliating bark and a pyramidal to rounded, broad-spreading habit. The Lacebark Pine is a nice looking plant with dark green needles. Bark on young plants begins to show patches of varying shades of green which, with maturity, can become almost white. Growth Rate medium, 6-12" annually
Discovered by the Russian collector, Dr. Alexander von Bunge in 1831 on the grounds of a Buddhist temple near Beijing, this medium-sized hardy pine emphasizes mesmerizing details throughout the year: artful mottled bark, dapper grassy green needles and an airy picturesque silhouette. The ornamental exfoliating bark peels back to reveal an extraordinary tapestry of silvery white, olive green and pale purple splotches amidst 4 in. long rigid needles, arranged in bundles of 3, and small amber brown cones. Branching near its base, Lacebark Pine grows slowly into a stylish multitrunked specimen with a broad, sometimes shrubby, spreading form that enjoys sunny well-drained sites. Grows slowly. Medium Band.
Bark flakes off in pieces like those of a jigsaw puzzle. One of the most overlooked conifers around; its dark green needles and multi-trunked character create year-round appeal. Air pruned roots assure you excellent transplant success. Exceptionally hardy.
A very slow growing pine whose bark flakes off in patches on old trees. One of the best trees in cultivation for ornamental bark. Rare and hard to find. Only grows 4-5? in ten years. Trees for posterity. Recommended by: Ohio Plant Selection Committee, the United States National Arboretum.
