Used over the centuries in Japan for bonsai and garden. The Japanese Black Pine is best known for its rugged trunk and thick, slightly-twisted needles and branches. It also features whitish terminal buds that contrast well with the dark needles; generally reaching 20-60' in cultivation this lovely conical tree can be up to 100' in the wild. Native to coastal conditions it is tolerant of salt. S/M-D
Japanese Black Pines are most often used for bonsai and high-detail pruning because of their easily shaped branching habit and dense clumps of needles. They form wide branches with a short rounded top more readily than most other pine species and mature trees often look manicured even when they never received any pruning.
Distinctive evergreen conifer with an open, irregular structure that can be considered more or less pyramidal. Dark green needles are densely crowded and twisted on the branches. Blackish-gray, fissured bark is attractive, as well as the prominent silvery-white terminal buds. Prefers fertile, moist, well-drained soil, but will grow in sandy soil and is tolerant of coastal conditions, such as salt spray. Can take on a contorted or twisting growth habit that make it popular for bonsai.
Widely grown oriental pine with fine character. A tall evergreen, or with pruning can be stunted for striking effects. 4-5' in ten years. Recommended by: United States National Arboretum.
