Nursery contributed plant descriptions

The elegant shrub form maple has incredible, dissected, 7-lobed leaves which emerge a dark orangey-red color, deepening to ruby and holding that intense color most of the season before maturing to a dark wine color. This low-maintenance cultivar becomes a spreading, pendulous mound 8-10' wide and tall. Foliage turns brilliant-red in autumn. This colorful selection is a knockout whether as a focal point, in a mixed border or alongside a pond. Such a delight it received the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society. Garnet Japanese Maple is a vigorous grower with rich red foliage that holds color well in full sun. The color will turn to bronze/green if planted in the shade. Garnet Japanese Maple has a graceful weeping habit that would be stunning spilling over a wall.
Garnet' is an attractive Japanese Maple variety that displays bright red dissected foliage on drooping branches and an umbrella habit. It has good color retention through the summer and even brighter red color in the fall. Like other weeping Japanese Maples, 'Garnet' develops a weeping form and can be staked upright to form a taller tree. We have found that these trees look best when the lower branches are removed.

Care and Receiving Your Tree
Like with other plants that are shipped bare root, you should plant your tree as soon as possible. When planting be sure to spread the roots out a little so they are not clumped together at the bottom of the hole. Japanese Maples want the top of their root crown to be covered with just an inch of soil - be careful not to apply heavy mulch directly on top of the roots as this can suffocate them. Water heavily as soon as you plant your tree but after that be careful not to overwater this beautiful specimen - Japanese Maples prefer long but less frequent watering. During the growing season we water our established trees for two hours once per week, depending on the climate and how hot/dry the weather is (maybe a little more frequently during the hottest part of the year and less frequently during spring and fall when it is cooler). If you are growing your Japanese Maples in containers be sure to use a well-drained soil mix (not peat or compost based, bark based soils do best) and water whenever the soil starts to dry out.

Japanese Maples do best when fertilized in the spring, we recommend a slow release pellet like Osmocote Plus in April. Don't apply fertilizer later than mid-June because it will encourage too much late season growth that will not have time to harden off enough for winter. The exact formula doesn't matter too much, we usually use 15-10-10 but any other works fine for Japanese Maples. Osmocote is the brand we use because it releases steadily for several months and so there is very little risk of over-fertilizing your plants.
Still a popular old standby grown for its vigor and lasting color. The rich, red-orange color holds well in full sun. The rather large, seven-lobed leaves separate entirely to the leaf base and appear a little coarser than other dissectums. The plant originally came from the Neatherlands.
Graceful and weeping, this Japanese maple is a stunner. Garnet colored leaves mature to purplish-green and then have lovely red fall color. To bring out the orange-red color in the deeply dissected leaves, plant in sun. Great for bonsai or to cascade over a wall. Introduced from Holland. Growth Rate 6-12" annually, medium
Like the gemstone, this old selection is noted for its red-orange leaf color. Garnet is a weeping lace leaf, which grows very fast when young. It should also be noted that this is one of the few red lace leafs which prefers full sun. If planted in the shade, the color will be bronze-green instead of red.
Dissectum Group - Red. Deep cut, orange-red leaves and weeping mound shape make this one of the most popular dissectum maples. Becoming very popular with growers because it grafts easily and finishes off quickly. A strong grower that holds good red color into summer. Grows 3-4' in ten years, but one of the largest growing dissectums. It may eventually reach 12-15' high and wide. It was discovered in a batch of seedlings imported to the Netherlands from Italy in 1959. It is now probably the most widely grown dissectum cultivar in Europe, and finding wide spread use in America. Awards: Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society. Award of Merit at Boskoop, The Netherlands (where it originated).

New growth dark red turns Orange-red summer, then brighter red in fall, Zones 5-9.
DISSECTUM, red. Syn. 'Dissectum Garnet.' An introduction from Holland. Well named, its color is the same as the precious gemstone garnet, and it holds very well through the summer. 'Garnet' forms a large mound of delicate foliage. It is strong growing and a very durable landscape plant. Fades if it gets dry.
