Nursery contributed plant descriptions

The lacy foliage of this slow-growing conifer is a deep, lustrous, dark-green above with and indentation at the tip and two white bands on the underside. This lovely, shade-tolerant, ornamental becomes a 30-40' tree (90' in the wild) and is often multi-stemmed. Mature specimens feature coper-brown bark with some fissuring and small dark-brown seed cones. A delightful tree for the shade garden! S-Sh/M
Zones: 4-9 Rare dwarf hemlock from the high alpine areas of Japan. Slow growing to 12-18 inches at 10 years, taller with age. Short dark green needles with white underside suggest rice. Sorry, nothing to eat here as the rice effect is visual only. We like to keep it as a mini dome shaped tree. Others trim to upright conical shape as it takes well to trimming or let grow naturally in free form. Takes more sun and heat than other hemlocks but best to protect from direct overhead sun in hot summer climates. Perfect for small landscapes, rock gardens larger troughs. Full sun in cool summer areas to part shade. Keep soil moist but well drained. Common names: Japanese Rice Tree, Northern Japanese Hemlock.
Known as the rice tree, needles twist to show silvery undersides. Resistant to wooly adelgid. Zones 5-9.
