This large shrubby tree to 30' has been cultivated over the ages both for its handsome deep-green, heart-shaped foliage and for its amazingly delicious, sweetly aromatic, deep-red fruits, our friend Lucile says they are so good "they make the hair on the back of your neck stand up!"; not as cold hardy as some but well worth growing if you can! This is the tree to which I take every visitor in late summer. The fruit bleeds wickedly down your hand as you pick, but the flavor makes you jump. Unfortunately, it can't stand any zone less than 7 and probably not more than 9. It may just be a westcoast tree. We are soooo lucky.
