Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Dark, almost black-red foliage is eye-catching in spring becoming an attractive bronze as the season progresses and more ?string-like? as the wood matures; desirable upright shrub form. S-PSh/M
Atrolineare' Japanese Maple has long, thin leaves that are quite unusual compared to other Japanese Maple varieties. The trees grow fairly tall, usually around 25 feet, and look the most interesting when viewed from a distance where the masses of long, narrow leaves create a shimmering effect. Once trees reach heights of around 10 feet tall they start to look more like a Dr. Seuss creation than a Japanese Maple.
Care and Receiving Your Tree
Like with other plants that are shipped bare root, you should plant your tree as soon as possible. When planting be sure to spread the roots out a little so they are not clumped together at the bottom of the hole. Japanese Maples want the top of their root crown to be covered with just an inch of soil - be careful not to apply heavy mulch directly on top of the roots as this can suffocate them. Water heavily as soon as you plant your tree but after that be careful not to over-water this beautiful specimen - Japanese Maples prefer long but less frequent watering. During the growing season we water our established trees for two hours once per week, depending on the climate and how hot/dry the weather is (maybe a little more frequently during the hottest part of the year and less frequently during spring and fall when it is cooler). If you are growing your Japanese Maples in containers be sure to use a well-drained soil mix (not peat or compost based, bark based soils do best) and water whenever the soil starts to dry out.

Japanese Maples do best when fertilized in the spring, we recommend a slow release pellet like Osmocote Plus in April. Don't apply fertilizer later than mid-June because it will encourage too much late season growth that will not have time to harden off enough for winter. The exact formula doesn't matter too much, we usually use 15-10-10 but any other works fine for Japanese Maples. Osmocote is the brand we use because it releases steadily for several months and so there is very little risk of over-fertilizing your plants.

Deciduous, upright maple with beautiful, narrow leaves emerging red in the spring. Mid-summer the foliage turns to bronze-green with red, then back to a stunning red in the fall. Prefers to be planted in filtered to full sun and moist, humus-rich, well drained soil. This is a red leaved form of 'Scolopendrifolium', also known as 'Scolopendrifolium Rubrum'. Growth Rate medium, 6-7' in 10 yrs.
Acer palmatum 'Atrolineare' Japanese Maple Tree - This nicely-shaped tree starts out deep purple, then fades to bronze in the heat of summer, and finally changes to a bright, clear, golden yellow in fall. It should grow to about 7-9'. This Japanese Maple tree makes a great focal point in any garden.
Very narrow, threadlike leaf lobes give the striking foliage of this dense, upright small tree an open, delicate look. Foliage starts out dark black-red in spring, then softens to burgundy or may bronze out with greenish undertones in full sun. Fall color follows with bright red. Unlike many selections with more rounded canopies, this linearilobum Japanese maple maintains a more narrow habit.
This highly desirable cultivar displays deep black-red foliage in early spring. Leaves may bronze out later in summer, especially if planted in the sun, then turn red again in autumn. Leaves become more string-like on older wood as tree ages.
Dark red narrow strap leaves turn bronzy with green undertones, fall color bright red. Zones 5-9.
I grow about 10 red strap leaves, as this is, and I am sure I can't tell this one from several others, but it is a nice tree growing vaselike to 12', turning slightly greenish in the summer, but providing a lovely show in the fall. Zone 5
Limited Supply. A distinctive small Japanese Maple in the linearlobum group, 'Atrolineare' is commonly called Red Ribbon or Bamboo Leaf Maple. It is slow growing, to about 10-12' tall with an upright vase shaped habit. It holds it's red color all season if grown in full sun, and this foliage becomes a deeper garnet ih the fall. 3-4' plants for spring shipping.
LINEARILOBUM, red. Syn. 'Scolopendrifolium rubrum.' A red leaved form of the famous, narrow leaved cultivar. It has great red color in spring and the earlier part of summer, then it turns to a bronze-green with red. When autumn arrives, it turns back to deep red.

Graceful, narrowly lobed leaves of garnet red set this small tree apart from the crowd. Not the newest model on the lot but a timeless classic.
