Vitifolium Japanese Maple, also known as the grapevine maple, due to its sizeable full moon leaves. This Japanese maple is known for its leaf size. Vitifolium Japanese Maple has a sturdy well-branched structure that will tower as an accent piece in the landscape. It features green leaves in the summer changing to yellow, bright orange, and fire truck red in the fall.
The larger and more shallowly lobed leaves of this fabulous maple do indeed resemble some grape (Vitis) leaves! This very lovely small tree typically reaches 10-15' and occasionally up to 20' and makes a wonderful understory plant. In spring, before the leaves emerge, this tree has small red blooms which become pretty red samaras in the autumn. Opening dark green, this grape-leaf look-a-like has 9-11 lobes which are deeply divided with strongly serrated. In fall, the leaves turn gold with prominent tones of crimson and scarlet turning a bright scarlet before they fall.
The name means 'grape-leafed', and that is what the large leaves resemble; the tree can get up to 30 feet or a little more in a graceful open sort of droopy habit. As with other japonicums, the fall color is varied with oranges, yellows, purples etc. zone 5
